What is the warranty on new dock construction?
Our dock warranty is for one year. This covers all workmanship, excluding normal wear and tear. Cracking and checking of lumber left untreated or professionally sealed is normal for pressure treated lumber and is excluded from this warranty.
For our Wood Docks we provide the following standard specifications at no additional cost:
•
Marine grade (.40) ACQ lumber
•
All lumber #1 select (top grade)
•
All stainless steel hardware
•
All nails stainless steel ring shank 316
What do you recommend for annual dock maintenance?
1.
Inspect for loose deck boards and rotting frame members. Re-attach and replace as necessary.
2.
Inspect the bolts holding your dock framing to the seawall and to the dock pilings. Tighten all loose bolts and nuts. Replace rusted galvanized fasteners with new stainless steel hardware. Also tighten bolts holding cleats and line holders.
3.
Apply a high quality, environmentally friendly, wood preservative/sealant to the deck boards. This will help repel water and extend wood life. It is not advisable to paint dock boards because most paints will peel in a short time and become unsightly.
4.
Inspect all electrical lines for broken or frayed insulation. Repair or replace as necessary.
5.
Check water lines for leaks and loose hangers and repair any that are in bad shape.
What can be done about deteriorating wood pilings?
If you check your wood pilings at low tide and see erosion and loss of wood at or near the water line, they are being eaten up by marine borers. These nasty critters can destroy your pilings in a few years, if you let them.
What should be done about holes behind a concrete seawall?
Almost all waterfront property owners have seen some holes behind their concrete seawalls. Sometimes they develop slowly, but often they appear overnight, usually after a rainstorm or following extremely high tides due to our occasional wind storm events. The most common cause is leakage of fill through the seawall panel seams or through rock wall crevices is due to capillary action of inflow and outflow of water flushing out the fill behind the seawall. Since the holes form from the bottom-up, even small depressions at the surface can indicate significant holes below. It's important to fix the problem for two reasons:
1.
Safety -- Avoid the costly liability of someone stepping into a hole and being injured.
2.
Preservation of the wall structure -- Densely packed fill behind the wall keeps it stable, protecting the tie-rods that anchor it.
Just filling the holes occasionally with sand, shell, crushed rock or even concrete is not enough. The leaks should be stopped and the holes should be properly compacted and filled. The sealing of seawalls is a relatively inexpensive maintenance practice that protects and preserves the seawall.
How are seawall seam seals repaired?
These are the important specifications -- Accept Nothing Less.
1.
If present, strip all loose and deteriorated grout from seams.
2.
Clean the area to be sealed of all marine growth and wire brush to promote new seal adhesion.
3.
Install the Blue Marlin Seawall Filter – to allow the run-off water to smoothly flow through holes; preventing water building up and flowing out through the seams and underneath the seawall. The Blue Marlin Seawall Filter is an erosion control drainage system for both new and retrofit applications in seawalls, retaining walls, bulkheads, shoring and erosion control structures.
4.
Once installed, the Blue Marlin Seawall Filter can be cleaned or changed very easily using the Blue Marlin Tool, thus preserving the life of the seawall for many years to come. The maintenance clean or filter change is a service Pinnacle Marine offers for your convenience; however, it’s easy enough for our customers to perform.
5.
Following the installation of the Blue Marlin Seawall Filter, use a high strength, quick setting marine grout to completely re-seal the panel seams to the mud line, followed by the installation of a polymer panel to prevent tidal washout of the new grout.
6.
Before and during filling, use a high pressure water jet probe to collapse and compact the holes behind the seawall, followed by the use of a quality compactable fill such as "drainfield rock."
7.
Re-sod the lawn if necessary.
